HENRICO COUNTY, Va. — While millions of people struggle with mental illness at some point in their life, it can be hard to recognize those battling the various forms of the debilitating disease.
In fact, more than 46 million Americans suffered from a mental illness in 2017, according to the CDC, and more than 11 million people suffered a severe mental illness during that same timeframe.
NAMI Virginia, a mental illness awareness and advocacy group, aims to break the stigma surrounding mental illness.
More than 1,000 people took part in the NAMI Walks 5K fundraiser Saturday at Innsbrook’s North Shore Commons, according to the group.
“People with mental illness really are superheroes because they are fighting a secret, invisible battle that other people can’t see,” Caitlin Reynolds said.
